According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heavy rain in Pune was mainly due to local weather conditions such as thunderstorm formation. SD Sanap, senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, explained that a cyclonic circulation over Central Maharashtra, combined with daytime temperatures touching 30 degrees Celsius and high humidity levels, created the perfect setting for thunderstorms. As a result, western parts of the city witnessed particularly intense showers.

The sudden downpour left several areas waterlogged. Residents shared photos and videos on social media showing flooded streets in Kothrud, Baner, Pashan, and Chandni Chowk. Motorists on the Pune-Bengaluru Highway reported near-zero visibility, making evening travel difficult.

Zomato’s weather monitoring stations also recorded high rainfall in parts of the city, with Bopkhel at 103 mm, Aundh at 89.2 mm, and Pimple Saudagar at 84.8 mm by late evening.

IMD has said that rainfall activity is likely to continue in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad till late at night. While no major alerts have been issued for September 19 to 22, a yellow alert has been sounded for September 22, when the city is expected to receive more showers at the start of the Navratri festival.

Commenting on the withdrawal of monsoon, noted weather expert Dr. Vineet Kumar said that the monsoon is unlikely to withdraw from Pune before the first week of October.
