Speaking to the media in Nagpur, Minister Gadkari confirmed that road development projects totaling ₹1.5 lakh crore have been sanctioned across Maharashtra for the coming year, with work expected to commence within the next three months.

New Mumbai-Pune and Pune-Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Expressways

The cornerstone of the announcement is the development of a second Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which will run parallel to the existing state-of-the-art road.

  • Project Details: The new 130-km expressway is estimated to cost ₹15,000 crore.
  • Route: It will extend from the Atal Setu near JNPA (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority) to Shivare Junction in Pune.
  • Travel Time Reduction: Once completed, the new route is projected to slash the travel time between Pune and Mumbai to a mere one-and-a-half hours. Furthermore, the Pune-Mumbai-Bengaluru journey will be covered in just five-and-a-half hours, significantly enhancing connectivity across the Western and Southern corridors.
  • Progress: The first phase, connecting Pagote (near JNPA) to Chowk (Panvel), has already received approval.

Gadkari also announced a new greenfield expressway connecting Pune to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad). Estimated at ₹16,318 crore, this project is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to just two hours. The new route is also touted to enable travel between Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur in roughly two-and-a-half to three hours.

Major Projects Approved for Pune District

Pune has been allocated a substantial share of the statewide development funds, with projects worth nearly ₹50,000 crore approved for the district alone.

Among the key local projects announced is the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur elevated corridor. This ambitious four-tier project, costing ₹4,207 crore, will incorporate a road at ground level, two flyovers, and a metro line on the top tier. The tender process is complete, and the foundation stone laying ceremony is imminent.

Additionally, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Hadapsar-Yavat Elevated Road is underway, with construction scheduled to begin after the local body elections.
