PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Deore has given his nod to send the proposal ahead for the development of the Intercity Transit Hub. This will be a big boost for West Pune’s commuting infrastructure, as the long-pending demand for an intercity transit hub at Balewadi has finally moved forward.

This marks a major win for the Forum for IT Employees (FITE), which has consistently raised concerns over the lack of safe and organized bus terminals in Pune’s fast-growing western corridor. The new facility at Balewadi is set to address pressing transport challenges faced by thousands of tech professionals and residents from nearby areas.

Decade-Old Commuting Woes

For years, commuters traveling to major cities such as Satara, Sangli, Karad, Kolhapur, and Mumbai have had to board intercity buses from unsafe and haphazard points under bridges or along highway shoulders near Wakad and Hinjawadi. This not only posed safety risks but also lacked the basic amenities expected in a modern transport system.

The proposed terminal will serve as a permanent, safe, and accessible boarding and alighting point for intercity travelers from Pune’s western region.

Who Will Benefit?

Once completed, the Balewadi Transit Hub is expected to significantly improve connectivity for:

  • Hinjawadi IT Park professionals
  • Tech employees from Baner–Balewadi
  • Residents from Mhalunge, Sus, Wakad, Aundh, Vishal Nagar, Marunji, and surrounding neighborhoods

The terminal is envisioned as a well-organized facility with structured boarding bays, seating areas, digital information systems, and possibly multi-modal integration to ease last-mile travel for commuters.

FITE’s Role in Advocacy

The Forum for IT Employees – Maharashtra chapter has played a pivotal role in pushing the authorities to act on the urgent need for infrastructure that keeps pace with the rapid urbanization of West Pune. Their continued advocacy has ensured that the tech workforce’s concerns around safety, accessibility, and comfort in commuting are finally being addressed.

As Pune expands and becomes a magnet for technology and service sector jobs, sustainable transport solutions like the Balewadi Transit Hub will be essential in ensuring urban livability and efficiency.
