The FASTag Annual Pass, launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on August 15, 2025, aims to make highway travel simpler and more cost-effective for private vehicle owners. For a one-time payment of ₹3,000, users can make up to 200 toll-free trips in a year or travel for 12 months, whichever comes first. The pass has already been popular, with over five lakh subscriptions within just four days.

However, it’s important to know that the pass is not valid everywhere. It only works on highways and expressways managed by NHAI or other central government bodies. Tolls on state-managed roads and expressways are not covered, and users must pay using their regular FASTag accounts.

Where the FASTag Annual Pass Doesn’t Work

Key exclusions include:

  • Yamuna Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)
  • Purvanchal Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)
  • Bundelkhand Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)
  • Agra-Lucknow Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)
  • Samruddhi Mahamarg (Maharashtra) – a state highway
  • Mumbai-Pune Expressway – run by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC)
  • Atal Setu, Mumbai – state-managed toll bridge
  • Other state highways and toll roads

Tolls on these routes must be paid separately from your regular FASTag account. Also, commercial vehicles, taxis, and parking charges are not included in the pass.

Why These Routes Are Excluded

The annual pass is designed specifically for national highways and expressways that fall under central authority. Many popular routes are managed by state agencies, which are outside the scheme’s scope for now.

Who Can Use the Annual Pass

The pass is only for private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. Your FASTag must be linked to the vehicle registration, and the pass cannot be transferred between vehicles. If you try using it on another vehicle, it will be deactivated.

  • One-way travel counts as one trip; a return counts as two
  • Closed toll systems count a full journey as one trip
  • Commercial vehicles, taxis, two-wheelers, and chassis-number vehicles are not eligible

How to Activate It

  • Download the Rajmarg Yatra app or visit the NHAI/MoRTH portal
  • Enter your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) and FASTag ID
  • Pay ₹3,000 via UPI, net banking, or card
  • Get confirmation via SMS or app (activation usually takes two hours)
  • Two accounts will be created—one for the annual pass and one for regular tolls

If your vehicle is registered by chassis number only, update it in the VAHAN database first.

Renewal and Benefits

Once expired, the pass automatically switches back to the standard mode. Users can renew it by paying ₹3,000 again. The scheme helps save money for frequent travellers and reduces time spent at toll booths. It also promotes digital payments and smoother highway management.

For now, state-run routes must still be paid for separately, but future expansions may bring more highways under the pass.

The FASTag Annual Pass offers great convenience and savings, especially for private vehicle owners travelling frequently on national highways. However, users must be cautious and check eligible routes before relying on it. With future upgrades, it may benefit commercial users as well, but for now, it’s best suited for personal travel.
