Driving Licence Suspension in Pune After Three Violations as Authorities Tighten Traffic Enforcement
Pune is set to see a much tougher approach to road safety after Divisional Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar ordered a citywide crackdown on traffic violations. The move follows the serious accident near Navale Bridge on November 13, which once again exposed the risks on this stretch.
What the New Enforcement Means for Drivers
Authorities have decided to tighten enforcement across the city. Key points include:
- Drivers will face driving licence suspension after three repeated violations.
- Vehicles may be seized if offences continue even after suspension.
- Every violator will be fined without exception.
- Police have asked the state for more manpower, and wardens will be deployed where required.

Why the Crackdown Was Needed
The Navale Bridge corridor has seen frequent accidents over the years. After the recent fatal pile-up, officials agreed that immediate and long-term safety steps cannot be delayed anymore.
During a review meeting attended by senior officers from PMC, PMRDA, the Traffic Police, NHAI and PMPML, the Divisional Commissioner made it clear that strict enforcement is the only way to bring discipline back to Pune’s roads.
Fresh Study of Accident-Prone Stretch
- SaveLife Foundation has been asked to conduct a detailed study of the stretch between the New Katraj Tunnel and Navale Bridge.
- The updated report will be submitted within two weeks.
- Earlier suggestions from SaveLife were partly implemented, but the recent accident has pushed authorities to revisit the issue.
Agencies Told to Act Quickly
Officials have been given firm deadlines and responsibilities:
- The District Collector must hold monthly road safety reviews.
- Agencies responsible for road upkeep will be held accountable for road conditions.
- Rumblers, road signs, barriers and safety boards must be installed where needed.
- Immediate action is required at identified blackspots.
- Plans are underway to set up an Integrated Traffic Control Centre for Pune, similar to the Hyderabad model.
What This Means for Pune
The new enforcement system aims to reduce accidents and improve discipline on city roads. With all major agencies working together and monthly monitoring in place, officials hope the city will finally see consistent improvements in traffic management.
