Double-Decker Bus Trials Successful, PMPML Plans to Launch Service by Diwali in Pune’s IT Parks and Other Busy Routes
Pune’s public transport system is set for a major upgrade as the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) prepares to launch double-decker buses by Diwali. The announcement follows successful trials conducted on September 16 on busy routes including the Hinjawadi IT Park corridor.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, PMPML chairman and managing director Pankaj Deore confirmed that the double-deckers will soon hit Pune’s roads. “The preliminary test runs were successful, and we are confident about introducing double-decker buses in Pune. Initially, 10 buses will be deployed on four major routes, Hinjawadi, Magarpatta, Kharadi, and Chinchwad, with additional services on the Alandi-Dehu corridor,” he said.
Manufactured by Chennai-based company Switch, the new buses were tested for performance, passenger comfort, and traffic readiness. Each vehicle can accommodate up to 85 passengers, compared to about 60 in regular PMPML buses. Officials say this added capacity will help reduce congestion during peak office hours, especially on IT-heavy routes.
