Heavy rains caused significant disruption across Pune district from Sunday night and are continuing on September 15th, leading to a major rescue operation and prompting urgent safety warnings from local authorities.
The district administration issued an Orange Alert earlier today, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and cloud-to-ground lightning for the next few hours. Officials are urging citizens to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.

The severity of the weather was highlighted by a serious incident in the village of Theur. Approximately 100 to 150 residents became stranded in a flooded District Council School campus after being surrounded by rainwater. A coordinated rescue effort, involving local teams, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), was immediately launched. So far, rescue teams have successfully moved 50-55 citizens to safety. Operations are ongoing to assist the remaining individuals.
Within Pune city, the persistent downpour has led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, causing major traffic snarls. The city’s Traffic Branch has issued an advisory, strongly requesting that people avoid travel unless absolutely essential.
The Deputy Commissioner of the Traffic Branch has made a humble appeal for all citizens to cooperate with officials for their own safety and to help ease the congestion.
