Pune is home to many ancient and towering trees, but did you know which one holds the title of the oldest? Nestled atop the historic Parvati Hill, a majestic White Frangipani tree (Plumeria rubra), locally known as Dev Chapha or Pandhra Chapha, stands as a living relic of Pune’s rich past. Estimated to be over 300 years old, this tree is believed to be the oldest in the city.

Parvati Hill has long been an integral part of Pune’s cultural and historical heritage, housing the iconic Devdeveshwar TemplePeshwa Museum, and ancient caves. Between the temple and the museum, within a serene garden, this centuries-old Chapha tree silently bears witness to Pune’s evolution.

Interestingly, the White Frangipani is not native to India. Historians suggest that the Portuguese brought it from Mexico and Central America, first planting it in Goa, then the Konkan region, and eventually Pune. Such trees are often found near temples across the country.

The tree’s presence predates the Devdeveshwar Temple, built by Nanasaheb Peshwa in 1749, making it a true historical treasure. Today, it stands tall in a gated courtyard near the temple management’s office, carefully preserved by the authorities. Visitors are advised to seek permission from temple staff before viewing this natural marvel.

A visit to this ancient tree offers a glimpse into Pune’s glorious past, surrounded by the tranquility of the hilltop temple complex.
