A Temple Steeped in Legend and Mystery

The Bhuleshwar Temple is shrouded in intriguing folklore. Locals believe that when a bowl of pedhas (sweets) is offered to the Shiva Linga, one or more mysteriously disappear. Another unique feature is the presence of an idol of Ganesha in female attire, worshipped as Ganeshwari, Lambodari, or Ganeshyani, alongside female versions of Shiva and Kartikeya.

Historical Significance & Architectural Marvel

Originally believed to have been built by the Pandavas, the temple underwent restoration (Jirnodhar) in 1230 AD during the Yadava dynasty. The structure is made of black basalt rock, distinct from the surrounding brownish basalt, adding to its uniqueness. The temple figurines were disfigured during Mughal invasions, yet the intricate carvings remain awe-inspiring.

The temple sits on Daulatmangal Fort (Mangalgad), constructed in 1629 by Adilshahi general Murar Jagdev Pandit, who used it to monitor Pune after looting the city in 1630. The play of light inside the temple, especially around the Garbhagriha (sanctum) and Antarala (vestibule), creates a captivating effect, making it a favorite among artists and photographers.
