Delhi-NCR Shaken! 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Jhajjar, Tremors Felt Across Capital Region

Updated on: July 10, 2025, 10:01 AM IST
Strong tremors jolted Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Jhajjar in Haryana. The quake, which occurred at 9:04 AM, sent panic among residents as people rushed out of buildings in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and surrounding areas. Fortunately, no casualties or major property damage have been reported so far.
Terrifying Moments as Tremors Rock Delhi-NCR
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake had a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter located 3 km northeast of Jhajjar and 51 km west of Delhi. The tremors were also felt in Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, with many residents reporting frightening experiences.

Eyewitnesses described violent shaking, with some claiming that cupboards and doors swung open due to the force. An eyewitness in Ghaziabad told ANI, “It felt like someone was shaking the entire shop. The tremors were really strong.” Another resident in Delhi said, “My vehicle shook—it was terrifying.”
Delhi’s History of Seismic Activity
This is not the first time Delhi-NCR has experienced such tremors. Earlier this year, on February 17, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in South Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan rattled the region. Data from the NCS reveals that 446 earthquakes have been recorded within a 50 km radius of Delhi between 1993 and 2025, ranging from magnitude 1.1 to 4.6, highlighting the area’s high seismic vulnerability.
Why Is Delhi-NCR So Prone to Earthquakes?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) classifies India into four seismic zones, with Delhi-NCR falling under Zone IV (severe intensity).
Experts attribute the frequent tremors to:
- Three active fault lines running through Delhi: Sohna, Mathura, and Delhi-Moradabad.
- Seven additional fault lines in neighboring Haryana.
- Proximity to the Himalayas, a highly seismic zone, making Delhi susceptible to aftershocks.
No Immediate Damage, But Vigilance Urged
While today’s earthquake did not cause any immediate destruction, authorities advise residents to remain cautious and follow earthquake safety protocols.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe!
With Delhi-NCR lying in a high-risk seismic zone, such tremors serve as a reminder to be prepared for potential natural disasters.
