In a major directive set to accelerate Pune’s infrastructure development, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed officials to ensure the Man-Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 project is completed within its stipulated timeframe by March 2026. The mandate was issued during a high-level meeting of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) held today at Vidhan Bhavan, Nagpur.
The meeting, chaired by CM Fadnavis and attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with concerned officials, focused on fast-tracking urban projects and improving civic amenities across the Pune Metropolitan Region.
₹1209.8 Crore Boost for Sanitation
A significant decision taken at the PMRDA meeting was the approval of a revised administrative sanction for ₹1209.8 crore for sewerage schemes in 27 villages within the PMRDA jurisdiction. This massive sanitation upgrade is projected to benefit an estimated population of 39.42 lakh residents in these areas.
Focus on River Rejuvenation and Safety
CM Fadnavis also emphasized the critical need for environmental protection and traffic safety:
- River Pollution Control: He directed agencies to curb pollution in the Mula, Mutha, Indrayani, and Pavana rivers, stressing that mechanisms must be in place to ensure no contaminated water flows into them. Three projects dedicated to the rejuvenation of these rivers are slated to begin soon.
- Nevale Bridge Safety: To mitigate the high number of accidents at the infamous Navale Bridge, the CM ordered the immediate commencement of service road construction along NH-48 and NH-548DD. He also called for exploring and implementing other viable alternatives to enhance safety in the area.
Structural Plan and Massive Project Pipeline
In a separate review meeting of the ‘Pune Mahanagar Planning Committee,’ CM Fadnavis gave directives to quickly finalize the city’s ‘Structural Plan’. This plan must account for future population growth and urbanization. He highlighted the massive scale of ongoing development:
- 220 projects worth ₹32,523 crore are sanctioned across the Pune Metropolitan Area.
- Currently, 127 road works covering 589 km are underway.
- Works include an 83 km internal circular road, 3 bridge/flyover projects, and 4 water supply schemes (with the Wagholi scheme now complete).
CM Fadnavis also instructed that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) take charge of the development planning for the 23 villages that were merged into its limits in June 2021. He specifically mentioned the need to expedite the Man-Mhalunge Township Planning scheme and other integrated Town Planning projects, setting fixed time limits for their completion.
Furthermore, a 20 km long Yerwada to Katraj underground highway is proposed, estimated to cost ₹7,500 crore, with its feasibility study currently in progress.
In a move aimed at reducing inconvenience, the CM directed that the newly built flyover near Pune University should be opened for public service without waiting for a formal inauguration ceremony.
The collective efforts underscore the state government’s commitment to boosting Pune’s infrastructure and quality of life through integrated, time-bound, and high-impact projects.
