Chandigarh on Alert as Air Raid Sirens Sound Off and On; Citizens Advised to Stay Indoors and Stay Away from Balconies

Chandigarh/Panchkula, May 9:
Intermittent air raid sirens echoed across Chandigarh on Thursday, triggering concerns among residents. In response, the Indian Air Force has issued an urgent advisory, requesting all citizens to remain indoors and avoid standing in balconies or open areas.
As tension builds, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is in a high-level meeting with Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan to assess the security situation and decide the future course of action following multiple provocations along the western border.
According to Defence expert Colonel (Retd) Daljeet Singh Cheema, Pakistan has launched a series of coordinated drone and munitions-based attacks along the entire western frontier. These attacks, however, were successfully repulsed by the Indian Army.

“The situation escalated significantly on April 22, the day of the Pahalgam terror attack,” said Cheema while speaking from Panchkula, Haryana. “It was a calculated move by Pakistan, likely in response to Indian preparedness and firm posturing. This escalation was not unexpected, especially after the venomous rhetoric from General Asif Munir.”
Cheema further emphasized that Pakistan misjudged India’s resolve, expecting a subdued reaction. “They thought we are a soft state, but it is heartening that the Indian government had already anticipated such a reaction and responded with decisive action,” he said.
The unfolding scenario has raised serious security concerns across North India, especially in border-adjacent cities like Chandigarh and Panchkula. While there has been no confirmation of any direct threat to Chandigarh, the continuous sirens and military advisories indicate a precautionary high alert status.
Citizens are advised to remain calm but vigilant and adhere to all instructions from local authorities and defense personnel.
