New Delhi, 27 May 2025 â€“ In a significant move to ease the tax filing process, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 from 31st July 2025 to 15th September 2025. The decision comes under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, ensuring a smoother compliance experience for taxpayers.

Reason for the Extension

The CBDT cited extensive revisions in the newly notified ITR forms, requiring additional time for system readiness and utility rollout. The updated ITRs feature structural and content changes aimed at simplifying compliance, improving transparency, and ensuring accurate reporting.

Additionally, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) credits, expected to reflect in taxpayer accounts by early June, would have left a narrow window for return filing without this extension. The move is expected to alleviate stakeholder concerns and provide taxpayers ample time for accurate submissions.

formal notification regarding the extension will be issued separately.

Key Benefits of the Extension

  • More time for taxpayers to gather necessary documents.
  • Smoother ITR utility integration due to system testing and development.
  • Reduced last-minute errors in tax filings.

This decision underscores the government’s commitment to ease of compliance while maintaining the integrity of the tax filing process.
