What Makes Blue Flag Beaches in Maharashtra Special

The Blue Flag beaches in Maharashtra have been certified by Denmark’s Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which awards this recognition to beaches meeting 33 strict criteria. These include water quality, environmental management, safety, public amenities, and educational initiatives promoting sustainability.

Maharashtra had nominated seven beaches for the prestigious Blue Flag Certification in May this year, out of which five have received the coveted certification.

Maharashtra Joins India’s Elite Blue Flag League

With the addition of these five Blue Flag beaches in Maharashtra, India now has 17 Blue Flag-certified beaches as of October 2025. Other certified beaches across the country include Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Ghoghla in Diu, Padubidri in Karnataka, and Radhanagar in the Andaman Islands. This achievement strengthens Maharashtra’s position as a leader in eco-friendly coastal tourism and reflects the state’s growing commitment to sustainable development.

Minister Tatkare described the recognition as “a proud moment for Maharashtra and a milestone in our mission to develop safe, clean, and environmentally responsible beaches.”
