Bengaluru Metro Goes Fully Digital: BMRCL Launches Unlimited Mobile QR Travel Passes

BENGALURU: In a major move to simplify urban commuting and promote a cashless economy, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has officially launched mobile QR-based unlimited travel passes. Starting January 15, 2026, Namma Metro passengers can purchase 1-day, 3-day, and 5-day unlimited passes directly through their smartphones.

The initiative is designed to eliminate the long queues at ticket counters and provide a seamless “tap-and-go” experience. Previously, unlimited travel passes were only available via physical Contactless Smart Cards (CSC), which required a refundable security deposit of ₹50. The new digital versions remove this requirement, making them more affordable and accessible for both regular commuters and tourists.

Key Features and Pricing

The mobile QR passes offer a significant cost advantage over their physical counterparts. Below is the updated pricing structure:

Pass TypeQR-Based Price (Mobile)Smart Card Price (Incl. ₹50 Deposit)
1-Day Pass₹250₹300
3-Day Pass₹550₹600
5-Day Pass₹850₹900

How to Use the Mobile QR Pass

  1. Purchase: Commuters can buy these passes through the official Namma Metro mobile app. BMRCL has indicated that the facility will soon be extended to other popular payment and mobility apps like Paytm, WhatsApp, and PhonePe.
  2. Validation: Upon purchase, a QR code is generated on the user’s mobile device.
  3. Entry/Exit: Passengers simply need to scan the QR code at the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates at any metro station to enter or exit.

This digital shift follows the successful integration of QR ticketing via ONDC, which has already seen a positive response from Bengaluru’s 8.5 lakh daily metro users. BMRCL Managing Director M. Maheshwar Rao emphasized that this expansion is part of a larger vision to create a unified digital ecosystem for multi-modal transport in the city.

For Pune residents frequently traveling to Bengaluru for business or leisure, this move offers a hassle-free way to navigate the city without worrying about physical cards or loose change.
