In a landmark development for India’s aviation sector, Kempegowda International Airport, popularly known as Bengaluru Airport, has announced its first-ever profit since commencing operations. The announcement came after a board meeting of the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) held on May 16, 2025, chaired by Shalini Rajneesh, Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka and Chairperson of BIAL.
Describing the achievement as a “historic milestone,” airport authorities credited this success to strategic planning, operational excellence, and an unwavering commitment to sustainability. After years of infrastructure investment and growth, Bengaluru Airport has emerged as a leading international aviation hub in India.
Pioneering Green Leadership in Asia
Beyond financial performance, Kempegowda International Airport has also gained global recognition for its sustainability achievements. On May 5, 2024, it became the first airport in Asia to receive Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI). This prestigious recognition reflects a 95.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2), marking a major environmental milestone.
As a result, BLR Airport achieved net-zero emissions status—seven years ahead of its 2030 target. This accomplishment cements its position as a leader in green airport infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.
International Accolades Keep Coming
Adding to its list of achievements, Kempegowda International Airport was recently awarded the Silver Award at the ACI Green Airports Recognition 2025. The award recognized its commitment to sustainable energy practices, specifically in the 15–38 million passenger category. This marks the fourth consecutive year the airport has received international accolades for its eco-friendly initiatives.
Bengaluru Airport: A Model for Growth and Responsibility
The success of Bengaluru Airport highlights how financial profitability and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. With rising passenger traffic, world-class facilities, and multiple green certifications, the airport has become a benchmark for sustainable airport management not just in India, but across the world.
This historic profit announcement also comes during a surge in air travel across India. With domestic and international passenger numbers rising rapidly, Kempegowda International Airport is showing how Indian airports can achieve economic success while prioritizing climate goals.
