Airline Bans the Use of Power Banks on Flights From October 01, 2025, But Why?

Starting October 1, 2025, Emirates passengers will not be allowed to use power banks during flights. While travellers can still carry a power bank in their cabin baggage, the device must remain switched off throughout the journey. This rule has been introduced to reduce battery-related safety risks on board.
The airline clarified that passengers may carry only one power bank of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh). These devices must display their capacity ratings clearly and can be stored only in the seat pocket or under the seat ahead, not in the overhead bins.
Why Emirates Banned Power Banks
According to Emirates, the growing use of power banks has contributed to a rise in lithium battery-related incidents in aviation. Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, commonly used in power banks, can overheat or malfunction, posing fire hazards. By banning in-flight use, Emirates aims to reduce these risks and ensure passenger safety.
What Travellers Should Do
Passengers are advised to ensure their electronic devices are fully charged before boarding, especially for long-haul flights. While Emirates aircraft are equipped with in-seat charging ports, power banks cannot be recharged onboard. Travellers should also check that their power banks are undamaged, under 100Wh, and strictly for personal use.
Global Aviation Rules on Power Banks
Aviation authorities worldwide, including the FAA, TSA, CAA, and IATA, regulate the carrying of power banks. The common rule is that they must be in hand luggage and cannot exceed 100Wh. Some airlines permit up to 160Wh with prior approval, while larger capacity devices are completely banned. IATA allows up to 20 spare batteries or power banks under 100Wh, and two between 100–160Wh with approval. However, airlines are free to impose stricter measures, as Emirates has done.
What it Means for Passengers
If you’re flying with Emirates after October 1, 2025, remember: carry only one power bank under 100Wh, keep it switched off, and don’t expect to use it during the flight. Make sure your devices are charged before takeoff and rely on in-seat charging options if needed.
