The flight, a Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft, was operating as SG-2963 from Kandla to Mumbai. After it became airborne, airport personnel on the ground discovered that one of the aircraft’s outer wheels had detached and was left on the runway.

According to an official statement from SpiceJet, the plane continued its journey to Mumbai. The airline reported that the landing was smooth and that the aircraft was able to taxi to the terminal gate on its own power. All passengers exited the plane normally without any reported injuries.

Officials confirmed that the aircraft was already airborne when Kandla air traffic control (ATC) spotted an object dropping from it.

While the airline’s statement described a routine landing, sources indicate that the pilots declared an emergency prior to landing in Mumbai as a standard precautionary measure. The Bombardier Q400 is equipped with a total of six wheels, and aircraft are designed to be able to land safely with a missing tire. An investigation into why the wheel detached is almost certainly underway.

Details on the number of passengers onboard have not yet been released.
