The UIDAI is getting ready to introduce a simple way for people to update the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar without stepping out of their homes. The update will be available through the Aadhaar app, which already offers several self-service options.

At present, anyone who wants to change the mobile number in their Aadhaar has to visit an authorised centre. This involves filling forms, waiting in queues and sometimes struggling to get appointments. The upcoming feature aims to remove all these hurdles and make the process fully digital.

In a post on X, UIDAI confirmed that users will soon be able to update their Aadhaar-linked mobile number through a secure process that uses OTP verification and face authentication. This face authentication will be done directly through the Aadhaar app. The authority described it as a convenient way to complete the update from home without paperwork or centre visits.

The move is expected to be especially helpful for senior citizens, people with disabilities and residents in rural areas where Aadhaar centres may be far or have limited operating hours. By shifting the process to smartphones, UIDAI hopes to make essential Aadhaar updates quicker and more accessible.

How the new update process will work

UIDAI has shared that the feature will use a two-level verification system. First, an OTP will be sent to the existing or the new mobile number. After that, the user will complete face authentication through the Aadhaar app. This combination will help maintain security while keeping the experience smooth.

The authority also stressed that once the option is live, users will not have to carry documents or wait in queues at any centre. Everything will be managed within the app.

Download the Aadhaar app in advance

The feature has not been activated yet, but UIDAI has said it will roll out soon. Until then, users are encouraged to download the Aadhaar app from the Play Store or App Store. When the feature is released, they will be able to enter their Aadhaar number, new mobile number and complete the verification steps from their phone.

The upgrade promises a more convenient way to manage Aadhaar details, reducing dependence on physical centres and saving time for millions of users.
