Haryana has created a new national headline with the auction of what is now the costliest number plate in India. The registration number HR88B8888 was sold for an eye-watering Rs 1.17 crore, breaking all previous records for VIP number plates in the country.
Record-Breaking Auction
The auction was conducted on the state’s official VIP-number portal and stayed active till 5 pm on Wednesday. It drew 45 applicants, a much higher turnout than usual.

- Closed at Rs 1.17 crore, setting a new national record
The number falls under the Kundli RTO series in Sonipat district and saw intense competition throughout the day.

Officials said the appeal of HR88B8888 lies in its rare visual pattern. The sequence of repeated eights already makes it attractive to many buyers. But there was an added twist — the letter ‘B’ in uppercase closely resembles the shape of the number 8, making the plate look like a continuous run of eights.

- Individuals looking for prestige value
These plates are considered auspicious and are often linked with prosperity, luck, and a strong social statement.

Haryana’s VIP Plate Craze
Haryana has seen a sharp rise in demand for fancy numbers over the last few years. The state conducts weekly online auctions, with registrations opening on Fridays, bidding held early in the week, and results declared every Wednesday.
Once bidding concludes, the winning bidder has to:
- Deposit the full amount within five days
- Block the allotted number for vehicle registration
The plate HR88B8888 will be assigned to a vehicle registered at the Kundli RTO after payment is completed.
The record-breaking sale has further boosted curiosity and competition around premium number plates in the state.
