PMC Issues Dengue and Chikungunya Alert in Pune, Urges Residents to Prevent Mosquito Breeding

Preventing Dengue and Chikungunya

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has asked citizens to take precautions against dengue and chikungunya by preventing mosquito breeding and keeping their surroundings clean.

The PMC’s Health and Vector-Borne Disease Control Department has advised residents to keep all stored water containers, including buckets, drums, barrels and water tanks, tightly covered. Containers should be scrubbed clean and dried before being refilled, as mosquito eggs can remain attached to their inner surfaces even after the water is emptied.

Housing societies have been asked to check the covers of underground and rooftop water tanks and ensure that old tyres, plastic containers, coconut shells and other waste do not accumulate on terraces or in open spaces where rainwater can collect.

Residents should also prevent mosquito larvae from developing in refrigerator trays, air coolers, money plant containers and saucers placed under flower pots. Water containing mosquito larvae from drums, barrels or buckets should be poured onto the ground rather than into drains.

The civic body has also advised installing mesh on toilet vent pipes, using mosquito nets while resting during the day and wearing full-sleeved clothing, as Aedes mosquitoes commonly bite during daylight hours. Guppy fish should be introduced into water containers that cannot be emptied.

People experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills or skin rashes have been advised to visit a PMC dispensary or hospital promptly for diagnosis and initial treatment. The civic body provides free diagnostic facilities for dengue and malaria at its dispensaries and hospitals.

Citizens who notice significant mosquito breeding or larvae in stored water can contact their local PMC ward office for prompt insecticide spraying.
