Pune: Man Gets Life Imprisonment for Sister’s Murder in 2010
Pune, September 30, 2026: Subojit Basu has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his 23-year-old sister, Priyadarshini Basu, at Aparajita society in Shinde Nagar, Pune, in April 2010, Hinjawadi police said in a press note dated September 25.
The court convicted Basu under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and imposed a fine of ₹10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional month of imprisonment.
According to the police account, the incident occurred before 4.25 am on April 14, 2010. Basu had attempted suicide after suffering business losses. When his sister intervened, he strangled her.
Police said he subsequently made another suicide attempt.
Police Sub-Inspector A. S. Vanjari filed the complaint on behalf of the state. The then investigating officer, Sub-Inspector R. T. Pawar, collected evidence from the scene, recorded witness statements and filed the chargesheet.
The case was selected as a “Star Case” under instructions from Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey and assigned to Senior Inspector Balaji Pandhare for court follow-up.
Public prosecutor Leena Pathak represented the state.
Police said the follow-up included ensuring witnesses attended court, obtaining the chemical analysis report, producing case property and coordinating with the prosecution.
The court considered the evidence and witness statements before delivering the sentence.
