Pune: PMC Plans New Flyover in Aundh From Bremen Chowk to Rajiv Gandhi Bridge to Ease Traffic Congestion

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started planning a new flyover in Aundh to address traffic congestion on the busy route connecting Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The proposed flyover will run from the Traffic Training School near Bremen Chowk towards Rajiv Gandhi Bridge and extend up to the Kasturba Colony area.

PMC has made a provision of ₹2 crore for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). A consultant will be appointed to carry out technical feasibility studies and prepare the DPR before the project moves towards tendering.

The route is used by commuters travelling between Pune and areas such as Wakad, Hinjawadi, Pimple Nilakh, Pimple Saudagar and Sangvi. Around 75% of the commuter traffic moves from the Pimpri side through Aundh towards Pune during the morning hours, with a similar flow in the opposite direction in the evening.

In the morning, traffic starts building up after vehicles cross Rajiv Gandhi Bridge into Pune, where the road narrows towards Bremen Chowk. During the evening peak hours, queues extend from Bremen Chowk and Rishi Chowk, past Aundh Police Chowky, up to Rajiv Gandhi Bridge.

The narrow stretch near Shri Shivaji Vidya Mandir School and the convergence of three roads at Bremen Chowk are among the main bottlenecks. Unauthorized roadside parking and encroachments also affect traffic movement on the route.

PMC had also examined the possibility of an underground road or subway at Bremen Chowk. However, this option was ruled out as a natural drain passes through the area. An elevated flyover was therefore selected for further planning.

A joint inspection of the proposed stretch was carried out by MLA Siddharth Shirole, Deputy Mayor Parshuram Wadekar, PMC Special Projects Department Head Dinkar Gojare and PMC Road Department Head Rajesh Bankar.

Gojare said the proposed flyover is intended to bypass two choke points, the narrow road near Shri Shivaji Vidya Mandir and the three-road junction at Bremen Chowk.

According to Shirole, ₹2 crore has been provided for the DPR. Once the procedural requirements and technical studies are completed and the project is approved, construction is expected to take around 1 to 1.5 years.

Road-widening work on parts of the same route is still incomplete. The Motor Vehicle Inspector General’s office in Aundh, which had earlier been an obstacle to widening the road, has been relocated following public and media follow-up. However, the PMC Road Department’s widening work is yet to be completed due to administrative delays at the Aundh-Baner Assistant Commissioner’s Office. Widening near Shri Shivaji Vidya Mandir School is also pending.

Wadekar said the flyover, once completed, would provide relief to commuters travelling between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
