The state government will soon decide to transfer the entire Hinjawadi IT hub to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to resolve longstanding civic administration and maintenance issues in the region. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the proposed move on Tuesday, September 01, while speaking at the Pudhari News Maha SUMMIT 2026, stating that merging the area into the civic body would allow regular maintenance works to be carried out smoothly.
The decision comes from the current structural setup, where local gram panchayats lack the administrative capacity and resources to maintain major industrial hubs despite receiving tax revenue from businesses operating there. While the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) develops and operates industrial estates, ongoing upkeep often suffers once basic layout work is complete. To fix this gap, the state administration is working on converting industrial estates across key belts into industrial townships managed under a unified civic system.
Hinjawadi currently houses Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, accommodating over 250 technology companies and more than 80 residential societies. For years, the IT hub has suffered from severe urban stress, drawing sharp criticism from residents and corporate employees over pothole-ridden roads, inadequate drainage, severe peak-hour traffic jams, and poor pedestrian pathways.
To address these immediate civic deficiencies, the Pune district administration has finalized a comprehensive ₹450-crore infrastructure development plan. The proposal prioritizes last-mile road connectivity, a robust drainage network, proper footpaths, and overall road repairs.
The Chief Minister is scheduled to chair a high-level review meeting shortly to finalize the implementation framework and select the executing agencies. Officials indicate that the project will likely be executed through a joint mechanism involving the MIDC and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), subject to final approval from the state leadership.
