Pune Metro Line 3 Gets CMRS Clearance for Commercial Operations Between Maan-Balewadi
Pune: The Pune Metro Line-3 connecting the Maan-Hinjawadi IT hub to the city center cleared a major legal hurdle on July 23, 2026, after receiving provisional authorization from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to begin passenger services between Maan Station and the R. K. Laxman Museum in Balewadi.
The clearance covers a 13-kilometer double-track stretch across 12 stations. With this approval, trains on the CBTC signaling system can now run in Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mode at speeds up to 80 km/h. The section operates on a 750V DC third-rail traction system.
The CMRS team conducted on-site safety inspections from July 5 to July 8, 2026, alongside senior officials from Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL). The final clearance followed trial runs and a review of statutory compliance documents, including Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) certificates, Chief Electrical Inspector to the Government (CEIG) clearance, Department of Telecommunications licenses, and fire department approvals for all 12 stations.
Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, Metropolitan Commissioner of PMRDA, stated that the administration is working to complete final formalities and launch commercial passenger services as soon as possible to ease traffic congestion around Hinjawadi.
