When Will Monsoon Revive in Pune? The Weather Experts May Have Some Good News

When Will Monsoon Revive in Pune

Too much of everything is bad. Residents of Pune witnessed a prolonged dry spell throughout the entire month of June, only to be followed by excessive rainfall in the first week of July.

However, after that heavy rain, which caused more damage than good, the city has been enduring another long dry spell since July 9.

Until now, weather experts had been tight-lipped about the revival of the monsoon due to the absence of any rain-bearing weather system. But all this is set to change. Anupam Kashyapi, former Head of the Weather Forecasting Division at IMD Pune, may have some good news.

He says another revival of the monsoon is on the cards by July 20. The intensity of rainfall will gradually increase over Konkan and the Western Ghats, including the ghats of Pune.

According to him, westerly winds blowing from the Arabian Sea toward the Indian Peninsula will start to strengthen from July 17, bringing moisture-laden clouds with them. A simultaneous formation of a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is also expected around July 20, which will bring more rain to Pune, Mumbai, and the rest of Maharashtra.

Kashyapi predicts monsoon-like rainfall activity in Pune from July 20 for a few days going forward.

Meanwhile, the immediate concern regarding dwindling drinking water resources was temporarily offset by the heavy rainfall in early July. However, that won’t be sufficient, the city of Pune needs more sustained and consistent rain through the remaining days of July and the month of August to meet the entire year’s quota of drinking water.
