Red Alert for Pune Ghats Continues as Monsoon Intensifies; City Areas to Get Moderate Rain

Very heavy to extremely heavy rain will continue in ghat regions around Pune as India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert till July 05 and orange alert thereafter.
This means that the outskirts on the city’s western side will receive heavy rain throughout the upcoming weekend. However, IMD says, the city areas will received only light to moderate rain and there is no active alert for Pune city as of now.
IMD advises residents to avoid venturing out towards hills and water bodies as the risk of flash floods and landslides is high.
The rainfall in Pune in the last 24 hours has been intense with intermittent spells of heavy rain. Shivajinagar has recorded 25.3 mm, Pashan 26.1 mm of rain since yesterday. Lohegaon (29.4 mm), Pashan (26.9 mm), Shivajinagar (25.3 mm), Koregaon Park (20.5 mm) and NDA (20.5 mm). Hadapsar and Magarpatta recorded 9 mm each, while Lavale received 0.5 mm.
However, as a result of these rains, residents of Pune have got a welcome break from the excessive summer heat they have endured during the months of May and June. The temperature fell as much as 5 degrees Celsius and the maximum and minimum temperatures are in the range of 25-22 degrees.
Tamhini has registered 170 mm, Lonavala 116 mm and Mulshi 68 mm.
It is important for the ghat areas of Pune to receive heavy rain as most of the reservoirs are located in the Western Ghats and are crucial for the water supply of Pune.
Meanwhile districts of Konkan district such as Palghar, Thane, Mumbai and Ratnagiri are on heightened alert levels as it has been raining heavy in these areas for the last 3-4 days and the trend is expected to continue in the next 2-3 days. Mumbai, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are on orange alert while the rest of Konkan still stays on red alert by IMD.
The Arabian coast is also experiencing rough weather conditions with winds blowing at 30-40 kmph and waves of 4.5 meters are expected to form by afternoon.
