Understanding the fundamental differences in fees, processing times, and verification procedures is essential for a smooth experience at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).

Key Differences at a Glance

1. Processing Timeline and Fees The most significant distinction lies in the speed of issuance. The Normal scheme typically takes up to 30 days, excluding the time required for police verification. In contrast, the Tatkaal scheme is designed for urgency, with processing completed within just three working days (excluding the date of application). This speed comes at a premium, as Tatkaal requires an additional fee on top of the standard passport charges.

2. Police Verification For a Normal application, police verification is usually conducted before the passport is issued. However, under the Tatkaal scheme, the passport is often issued on a “post-police verification” basis, meaning the document is granted first, and the verification follows later.

3. Appointment Availability and Centers Tatkaal applicants generally benefit from faster appointment availability. However, it is important to note that while Normal applications can be processed at both Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs), Tatkaal applications are strictly processed only at PSKs.

The image features a side-by-side comparison table across six categories:

Fees: Normal uses standard fees; Tatkaal requires additional higher fees.

Processing Time: Normal takes up to 30 days (excluding police verification); Tatkaal takes up to 3 working days.

Appointment: Normal has standard availability; Tatkaal offers faster availability.

Police Verification: Usually happens before issuance for Normal and after issuance for Tatkaal.

Eligibility: Normal is open to all; Tatkaal has limited availability and excludes cases like name changes or lost passports.

Processing Center: Normal is processed at PSKs and POPSKs; Tatkaal is processed only at PSKs.

Eligibility and Restrictions

The Tatkaal scheme is not a universal option. It is restricted for certain categories, including:

  • Cases involving a change of name.
  • Applicants with ongoing court cases.
  • Requests for changes in date or place of birth.
  • Replacement of lost, stolen, or damaged passports.

The authorities advise that when in doubt regarding eligibility, applicants should opt for the Normal scheme to avoid complications.

How to Proceed

Before starting an application, it is highly recommended to use the official Document Advisory tool to ensure all paperwork is in order. Prospective Tatkaal applicants should also verify their specific eligibility on the official Passport Seva portal.

Ultimately, the final issuance remains subject to document completeness and the outcomes of the police verification process.
