Pune: Scooter Catches Fire While Filling Petrol; Major Disaster Averted

Scooter Catches Fire While Filling Petrol

Pune, March 27, 2026: A potentially catastrophic accident was averted at an HP petrol pump on the Pune-Nagar Road on Friday after a scooter suddenly burst into flames during refueling. The incident, which occurred in the Aga Nagar area of Wadgaon Sheri near Viman Nagar, triggered a wave of panic among customers and station staff.

The fire broke out while a Honda Activa 5G was being filled with petrol. According to eyewitnesses and the pump manager, flames suddenly erupted from the vehicle’s tank area, quickly engulfing the scooter. The sight of a burning vehicle in the immediate vicinity of fuel dispensers led to a chaotic situation as people scrambled for safety.

Quick Response Prevents Disaster

The situation was brought under control through the swift intervention of alert citizens and petrol pump employees. Utilizing the fire extinguishers stationed at the pump, they managed to battle the blaze before it could spread to the underground fuel reservoirs or other vehicles.

Shortly after the initial response, personnel from the Pune Fire Brigade arrived at the location to take charge. Firefighters sprayed water on the scorched vehicle to ensure complete cooling and to prevent any possibility of reignition. While the scooter sustained severe damage, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident.

Safety Warning for Commuters

While an official investigation into the exact cause of the fire is expected, initial reports suggest the blaze began during the refueling process.

Safety experts and authorities are using this incident to remind motorists of crucial refueling precautions. To minimize the risk of fire, especially during rising temperatures, vehicle owners are advised:

  • Avoid overfilling: Never fill the fuel tank to the absolute brim.
  • Allow for expansion: Leave a small amount of space in the tank to account for fuel expansion caused by heat.
  • Engine Off: Always ensure the engine is switched off and mobile phone usage is avoided during the process.

The timely coordination between the public and emergency services played a pivotal role in ensuring that what could have been a major explosion remained a contained incident with no loss of life.
