Pune-Konkan Travel Alert: Varandha Ghat May Shut for Two Months for Urgent Road Work

A Two-Month Shutdown Looms for Scenic Varandha Ghat

Travellers commuting between Pune and the Konkan region may soon face a significant disruption. The Highway Department has proposed a complete shutdown of the scenic Varandha Ghat (NH 965 DD) for up to two months to facilitate urgent road-widening and concreting work. The proposal is currently under review by the Bhor administration, with a final decision expected soon.

The potential closure comes as authorities race against time to complete critical infrastructure work before the onset of the monsoon season, which typically makes construction in the hilly terrain even more challenging.

Why is the Ghat Being Considered for Closure?

The request for the shutdown stems from a combination of safety concerns and the technical difficulties of the ongoing construction. According to officials from the Highway Department, the stretch between Hirdoshi and Varandha Ghat is particularly problematic. It features extremely narrow roads and sharp, dangerous curves that make it unsafe for traffic to coexist with heavy construction equipment.

Space Constraints and Safety Risks

A major bottleneck exists beyond Hirdoshi, where the road is hemmed in by the Deoghar Dam on one side and steep, towering mountains on the other. This lack of space makes it physically impossible to widen the road while allowing vehicles to pass. Officials argue that keeping the route open during the concretization process poses a serious risk to commuters and workers alike.

Current Status: What is the Administration’s Stand?

While the shutdown is not yet finalized, administrative wheels are already in motion. The Highway Department has formally submitted its request to Dr. Vikas Kharat, the Sub-Divisional Officer of Bhor.

Confirming the development, Dr. Kharat stated that he has directed the local revenue and police departments to submit detailed reports on the matter. The district administration will make the final call based on these findings. Commuters are eagerly waiting for an official announcement to plan their travel accordingly.

Impact on Commuters and Alternative Routes

If the administration approves the two-month shutdown, the closure will affect thousands of daily commuters, tourists, and commercial vehicles that rely on this route as a vital link between Pune and the coastal Konkan belt.

Planning Your Journey: The Tamhini Ghat Option

In the event of a closure, travellers will need to take alternative routes to reach their destinations. The most commonly recommended detour is Tamhini Ghat (Pune-Mulshi-Mangaon), which provides a safe, albeit longer, connection to the Konkan region. Another possible alternative is via Poladpur. Travellers should factor in additional travel time of at least 1-2 hours if forced to take these diversions.

A History of Disruptions: Locals Demand Permanent Fix

The proposed shutdown has reignited a familiar debate among residents and frequent travellers. For years, Varandha Ghat has faced seasonal closures, especially during the monsoon, due to landslide risks. However, locals are now questioning why, despite the route being declared a National Highway and substantial funds being allocated (reportedly around ₹723 crores), the road remains vulnerable to such long-term closures.

Residents from villages like Umbarde and Hirdoshi have expressed concern over the economic impact, noting that closures disrupt access to markets, schools, and hospitals, severely affecting their livelihood. Social activists have urged the administration to focus on durable, permanent solutions rather than relying on temporary shutdowns every year.
