Weather Update: Cold Wave Returns as Mercury Plummets to 8.1°C in Pune; Chilly Weather to Continue for a Few Days

Pune, December 21, 2025: After a brief respite, a biting chill has returned to Pune, with the city recording a significant drop in temperatures over the last 48 hours. On Saturday morning, the Shivajinagar observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 8.1°C, marking one of the coldest mornings of the season.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the sudden drop is attributed to clear skies, dry weather, and the influx of cold northerly winds. While the early mornings have been characterized by a thick layer of haze and shivering temperatures, the afternoons remain relatively warm, with the maximum temperature hovering around 30°C.

Cold Wave Persists Across the District

The chill is even more pronounced in the outskirts and surrounding areas. While Shivajinagar hit 8.1°C, other pockets of the district reported even lower figures:

  • Haveli: 6.9°C (Lowest in the district)
  • Pashan: 7.3°C
  • Malin: 7.3°C
  • Baramati: 7.6°C
  • Talegaon: 8.3°C

In contrast, areas like Koregaon Park, Magarpatta, and Chinchwad remained slightly warmer, with temperatures ranging between 12°C and 15°C.

Forecast: What to Expect?

The IMD has predicted that the weather will remain stable for the next 48 hours. For Sunday, December 21, the minimum temperature is expected to hold steady at approximately 9°C, with skies remaining mainly clear and becoming partly cloudy towards the evening.

“The northerly winds blowing via North and Central India have been the primary driver for this dip,” stated an IMD official. However, a gradual rise in nighttime temperatures is expected starting next week, potentially reaching 12°C by December 24 as the wind patterns shift.

For now, Punekars are advised to keep their woolens handy as the morning mist and crisp air continue to define the city’s winter landscape.
