Pune, December 15, 2025: Katraj
A fatal road accident on Katraj-Kondhwa Road this morning has sparked a serious public inquiry into the safety and planning of traffic arrangements during high-profile events. Ramatai Kapdi, a 53-year-old local resident and teacher at JSPM, lost her life after her scooter was struck by a container truck near the Gagan Unnati Building diversion.
The accident occurred around 7:30 am, during the peak morning commute. The Honda scooter ridden by Ms. Kapdi came under the rear wheels of a container truck. Ms. Kapdi sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Bharati Hospital with the help of local residents, but tragically succumbed to her injuries shortly after admission, reportedly due to excessive bleeding.
Fatal Delay Amidst Traffic Congestion
The incident took place amidst significant traffic diversions implemented for the day, for a VVIP visit to the city. The diversions led to heavy congestion across the route.

Police confirmed that the traffic movement was restored after the container truck and its driver were taken into custody and the vehicle was cleared from the road. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav stated that police staff managed the situation on-site to ease the resulting gridlock.
Police have registered a case, and a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. The probe will specifically examine whether the restrictive traffic arrangements contributed to the delay in medical assistance reaching the victim. The tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about the preparedness and safety measures surrounding VVIP movements in Pune’s densely populated corridors.
