A hospital in Wadgaon Sheri alone treated 15 children aged between six and sixteen for burns to their eyelids, eyelashes, and eyes. Some suffered corneal epithelial defects, an injury that, if left untreated, can lead to serious vision issues. Thankfully, doctors said most cases were not sight-threatening and could be treated with medication, cleaning, and protective eye patching.

Several other clinics across the city also reported similar cases among adults and children. In one severe incident, a 28-year-old man suffered a serious eye injury that significantly affected his vision and required specialized treatment. Other patients reported burns caused by debris, soot particles, and accidental contact with lit firecrackers.

Eye specialists across Pune have urged citizens to take extra care while celebrating. They cautioned against using over-the-counter eye drops without medical advice, as improper medication can worsen injuries. Doctors stressed that even minor eye burns or redness after exposure to fireworks should be examined by an ophthalmologist immediately to prevent complications.

With several such incidents every festive season, experts have reiterated the importance of maintaining distance from fireworks and ensuring that children are supervised at all times. They also advised using protective eyewear when lighting or watching fireworks to reduce the risk of injuries.
