The initiative, inspired by the concept ‘From Waste to Wealth’ and ‘Read and Succeed’, aims to promote a culture of reading among citizens and students. Visitors can access a range of books on educational, inspirational, historical, and spiritual topics — all free of charge.

Siddharth Shirole Donates 250 Books
During the inauguration, MLA Siddharth Shirole donated around 250 books to the library, covering a wide variety of subjects. He praised PMPML’s creativity, saying, “Converting a scrap bus into a library is commendable. In today’s digital age, when young people are often glued to screens, this project encourages them to reconnect with the habit of reading.”

Free Wi-Fi and Plans for Expansion
Adding to the library’s appeal, the bus has been equipped with free Wi-Fi, making it a comfortable and engaging space for readers. PMPML’s Public Relations Officer, Kishor Chavan, shared that this is just the beginning. “This is the first bus, but the number will not stop here. After Diwali, several more scrap buses will be converted into libraries and set up at key locations across Pune,” he said.

The response from the public has already been very positive, with many citizens offering to donate books. PMPML has also emphasized that all the buses used in this project are made entirely from scrap materials, ensuring that no new parts are used – a perfect example of turning waste into something meaningful and sustainable.

Encouraging a Reading Habit Among Punekars
CMD Pankaj Devre added that the PMPML Free Library reflects the organization’s larger goal of serving citizens beyond transport. “We want to encourage Punekars to visit, read, and even contribute by donating books. It’s a small step toward building a more informed and connected community,” he said.
