Pune’s metro network is set for a major expansion with plans to connect Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hinjawadi IT Park, and Chakan MIDC through a ring metro corridor. The proposal gained momentum after a key meeting on September 21, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar with MahaMetro MD Shravan Hardikar, PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh, and Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge.

One of the most discussed proposals was a new Nigdi to Chakan metro line via Talawade, which would link Talawade IT Park, Cambay Chowk, Mahindra, Mahalunge, and Kharabwadi. This route is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters working in the IT and manufacturing hubs of Hinjawadi and Chakan. Pune Metro will soon conduct a survey for the extension and prepare a detailed project report (DPR).

The meeting also reviewed the earlier DPR for the 42 km Nigdi–Wakad–Chakan metro alignment. The route is being revised to cover more residential and industrial clusters to improve connectivity for workers and residents alike.

A major infrastructure highlight is the proposal for double-decker bridges to integrate metro and highway projects. One is planned between Godown Chowk and Chakan along the Pune–Nashik Highway, combining the Nashik Phata–Khed Elevated Corridor with the metro line. Another double-decker bridge is being designed between Ramwadi and Wagholi to integrate the Pune–Shirur Elevated Corridor with the metro extension from Ramwadi to Wagholi.

Officials said approvals for the revised DPR and Talawade extension will be fast-tracked, with a special meeting scheduled in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to finalize decisions and approve corridor extensions.

MLA Mahesh Landge also shared that other route proposals are under consideration, including PCMC’s DPR for a Neo Metro along the HCMTR alignment, which will connect major Pimpri-Chinchwad areas and provide interchanges with existing lines. Additional suggestions include a Nigdi–Wagholi metro via Chikhali, Moshi, and Charholi, and an extension of the planned Ramwadi–Pune Airport line towards Vishrantwadi, Dighi, Charholi, and Alandi.

Once approved, these projects will significantly expand Pune Metro’s reach, creating seamless links between IT parks, industrial hubs, residential areas, and the airport, making urban travel more efficient.
