The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has launched a new FASTag Annual Pass Scheme for private car owners. The scheme, effective from 15 August 2025, allows private cars, jeeps, and vans to use national highways and expressways with a single annual payment.

Under the new system, vehicle owners can pay Rs 3,000 to activate an annual pass. This covers either one year of travel or 200 fee plaza crossings, whichever comes first. At fee plazas with a closed collection system, one entry and exit together will count as a single crossing.

The move is designed to reduce the need for frequent FASTag recharges and ease the user fee burden for regular highway travellers. It applies to all national highways (NH) and national expressways (NE). However, state highways and expressways are not included in this scheme yet. The Centre has said that if state governments are willing to introduce a similar model, full technical support will be provided.

Apart from the annual pass, the ministry has also revised the way toll fees are calculated on certain national highway stretches that include large structures such as bridges and tunnels. According to the new notification, fees will now be based on either ten times the length of such structures or five times the total highway section length, whichever is lower.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari shared these details in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, noting that the measures will help rationalize toll charges and bring relief to vehicle owners who frequently use highways.
