Pune’s Metro Line 3: A Game-Changer for Commuters

Get ready, Pune! The much-awaited Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 is inching closer to reality, and it’s set to transform how we travel across the city. Stretching 23.3 km with 23 elevated stations, this line will connect key hubs, including major interchange points with existing metro routes. The sleek, fully air-conditioned three-coach trains will zip through at speeds of up to 80 km/h, comfortably carrying around 1,000 passengers per trip.

Who’s Making It Happen?

Spearheaded by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCRL), this project is a shining example of a public-private partnership (PPP) done right. Construction kicked off on November 25, 2024, and guess what? Over 87% of the work is already complete! That’s some serious progress.

Trial Runs – Smooth Sailing So Far!

Last month, the metro successfully completed its second trial run, cruising at 40 km/h between Maan Depot and PMR-4 Station. This followed the first trial in July, where full-system testing began. Both runs went off without a hitch, proving that the line is operationally ready and safe for passengers.

Partial Opening to Ease Hinjawadi’s Traffic Nightmare

Let’s be real—Hinjawadi’s IT hub has been a traffic nightmare for months. To give commuters some much-needed relief, PMRDA is planning a partial launch by September 2025, opening a 13-km stretch from Megapolis Circle to Balewadi Phata. The full line, from Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar, is expected to be up and running by March 2026.
