Pune, July 13, 2025: A tourist visiting the scenic Kalu Waterfall in the Khireshwar area of Junnar had a near-fatal experience on Friday afternoon after slipping and plunging into the gorge. The incident occurred around 3 PM at the first tier of the five-stage waterfall, known for its steep drops and deep valleys.

According to eyewitnesses, the tourist—part of a group traveling from Pune and Hyderabad—lost his footing while crossing the Kalu River and was dragged by the strong currents. He was left stranded on a narrow ledge, hundreds of feet below, with fast-flowing water threatening to sweep him away.

With no professional rescue gear available, quick-thinking locals improvised by tying together scarves and dupattas to form a makeshift rope. Using this, they managed to pull the stranded man to safety in a daring rescue operation. A video capturing the dramatic moment has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread praise for the locals’ bravery.

Following the incident, residents raised concerns over the increasing number of accidents at the popular monsoon destination. Many tourists risk their lives by venturing too close to the edge to capture photos or videos. Locals are now urging authorities to install protective railings and deploy safety personnel during peak visiting hours, especially on weekends and holidays. They also appealed to tourists to exercise caution and avoid dangerous spots near waterfalls and fast-flowing streams.
