Pune: PCMC Launches ‘Green Society’ Initiative to Honour Eco-Friendly Housing Societies

In a bid to promote sustainable urban living, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has rolled out the ‘Green Society’ initiative, aiming to recognize and reward housing societies that adopt eco-friendly practices. The program seeks to foster environmental awareness while encouraging communities to reduce their ecological footprint.
How It Works
Societies will be evaluated on five key sustainability parameters:
- Waste Segregation (wet and dry waste separation)
- In-House Composting (managing organic waste within premises)
- Solar Energy Use (for common area electricity needs)
- Rainwater Harvesting (efficient collection and utilization)
- Sewage Treatment & Water Reuse (recycling greywater for gardening)
For each criterion met, societies will earn a ‘Green Star’. Those achieving all five will be felicitated by PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh in a special ceremony.
A Step Towards Greener Communities
Commissioner Singh emphasized that the initiative aims to transform residents into ‘Green Ambassadors’, inspiring wider adoption of sustainable practices. Deputy Commissioner Sachin Pawar, overseeing the project, called it a “people-driven movement” to build environmental consciousness.
The program will be implemented in phases, starting with awareness sessions, followed by registrations, training workshops, and on-ground assessments.
“Every society has the potential to reduce its environmental impact. This initiative celebrates those leading the change,” said Singh.
With structured recognition, PCMC hopes to motivate more societies to contribute to a greener, healthier Pimpri Chinchwad.
