Pune, 4th June 2025 – In a landmark initiative to empower senior citizens, the Pune Registration and Stamp Duty Department has introduced Maharashtra’s first doorstep Will-making and registration service. This program aims to simplify estate planning for the elderly while minimizing future family disputes over inheritance.

Launched under the state government’s 100-day administrative reform plan, the service is part of the ‘Sairam – RESPECT’ project, designed to provide legal assistance to senior citizens who face mobility or health challenges. The initiative began with awareness sessions at Sonashray Old Age Home in Mohammadwadi, where officials educated residents about the importance of drafting a Will.

How the Service Works:

  • Eligibility: Senior citizens who are mentally sound but unable to visit sub-registrar offices due to health issues.
  • Application: Legal representatives or family members must apply at the nearest sub-registrar office or online via igrmaharashtra.gov.in.
  • Medical Certificate: Mandatory to confirm mental competency, even for bedridden applicants.
  • Home Visit: Scheduled within 2-3 days of application, with a nominal fee of ₹300.
  • Video Recording: The entire process is recorded for legal transparency, and a copy is submitted to the registrar.

Key Features of a Valid Will:

  • Can be handwritten or typed on plain paper (no stamp duty required).
  • Must be signed in the presence of two independent witnesses (non-beneficiaries).
  • Registration is optional but recommended for legal validity.
  • A medical certificate affirming mental fitness is advisable.

Benefits of Registering a Will:

  • Legal Proof: A registered Will holds strong evidentiary value in courts.
  • Nominal Fee: Only ₹100 for registration at any sub-registrar office.
  • Flexibility: Can be updated anytime; only the latest valid Will is enforceable.

District Registrar Santosh Hingane emphasized, “This service ensures that senior citizens can secure their property rights without hardship. We encourage families to utilize this facility to avoid future legal complications.”
