Pune: Sinhagad Fort Continues to Remain Closed to Tourists for Few More Days as Anti-Encroachment Drive Intensifies

Pune, 30th May 2025: The historic Sinhagad Fort, a beloved trekking and tourist spot near Pune, will remain shut for visitors from May 31 to June 1 or 2 as authorities carry out a large-scale anti-encroachment operation. The move aims to demolish illegal structures and restore the fort’s natural and historical integrity. Forest officials confirmed that all access points, including trekking routes, will be closed during this period for safety and administrative reasons. Officials of Pune Forest Division, stated, “The drive is still underway, and heavy machinery cannot reach the fort’s summit, so manual demolition is being done, which is time-consuming.” The operation is part of a state-wide initiative directed by the Maharashtra Government to clear encroachments from protected heritage and forest lands. Earlier notices were issued to violators, and after no valid documents were submitted, a joint eviction drive involving multiple departments—Forest, Revenue, Archaeology, Police, and Public Works—was executed on May 29-30. Officials confirmed that while some illegal constructions have already been removed, the remaining work will continue over the weekend. Citizens and trekkers have been urged to avoid the fort until June 1 or 2. They added, “We seek public cooperation in preserving Sinhagad’s heritage and ecology.” Located 30 km from Pune, the fort attracts thousands monthly, making this drive crucial for its long-term conservation.
